2013 is a very important year in the history of our club. It is to be celebration of 60 wonderful years of Navan Road Club, and plans are in place to mark the occasion with various events during the year.
The club was founded in September 1953 and many of those present at that very first meeting are well remembered within the club to this day. Initial membership was only 1 shilling.!….oh how things have changed.! The first ever club championships were held in November 1953 with Frank Reilly coming out on-top, with Tom Healy 2nd ,andLeo Collins 3rd. It was clear from a very early stage that the club was lucky to have some very talented racing cyclist, and the following years are littered with some fabulous racing results.
The first staging of the Meath Grand Prix took place in June 1954 and proudly continues to this day. We would like to see this years staging of the race as a celebration of many years of hard work within the club. Also in ’54 the club entered our first ever team in the Ras Tailteann containing 6 Navan riders, it certainly wasn’t to be the last.
Its amazing to look back at the history of the club, and i simply couldn’t do it justice in this post alone, so i intend to post a ‘Special Report’ once a month during the year documenting some of the more intersting and colorful chapters of our history…….so keep your eyes on this site in 2013.!
