It’s an exciting time to be involved in women’s cycling. This weekend, the 8th and 9th of December, the Women’s Commission and Head Development Coach, Paddy Doran, held a training camp in Corkagh Park, Dublin with special guest Wendy Houvenaghel.
Wendy, a full time cyclist with team GB, specialises in time trials on the road and pursuits on the track. She is a 12 time national champion, multiple world champion and an Olympic silver medalist, to name but a few of her achievements.
Saturday’s camp was open to women of all ages and levels of ability. It began with a presentation from Wendy, detailing her pathway to success and giving plenty of tips for aspiring cyclists. She then spent a lot of time answering our many questions. Next up was an intense turbo session that left us all well ready for our dinners!
On Sunday, the Women’s Development Squad and 2020 Talent Team had the unique opportunity of having a training session led by the former world champion. This included some fun events such as a devil race and team pursuit. It was a very enjoyable session and (just to warn you) I’m definitely going to be bragging about Wendy holding my bike for a standing start for quite a while!
After we had finished up, Wendy stayed around to answer some more questions. She was very generous with her time and most of us got some time to have a bit of a chat with her one to one. Of course I couldn’t miss the opportunity to get my Navan jersey signed!
All in all it was a pretty amazing weekend. We got some fantastic advice and had the opportunity to meet one of the most successful female cyclists in the world. Huge thanks to all who made it possible and to Wendy Houvenaghel for being so giving of her time.
